Hilo Orchid Society President Larry Kuekes announces the first winner of an award for “The organization which has done the most during the past year to promote Hawaii Island as the Orchid Isle.”

The inaugural annual award goes to the Panaewa Rainforest Zoo and Gardens because of its partnership with the Hilo Orchid Society and HOS member Eric Guttormsen, who took the lead in placing orchids on trees, the way they grow in nature, throughout the zoo gardens.

“We are so honored to be the first recipient of this very special award,” said zoo director Pam Mizuno. “For many years, our zoo visitors have benefited from the generosity and volunteer hours of Hilo Orchid Society members. The orchid collection is an integral part of our gardens and allows various orchids to be displayed and viewed in a natural garden setting. There is always something in bloom for everyone to enjoy!”

She will be on hand at noon Friday, Aug. 1, at the Hilo Orchid Show to accept the award.

The Orchid Show &Sale will take place Aug. 1-3 at Edith Kanaka‘ole Multipurpose Stadium.

Tickets are available until July 30 at Paradise Plants, Hilo Coffee Mill and Garden Exchange for $3, and will be at the door for $5; children 12 and younger are free. For more information, visitwww.hiloorchidsociety.org.
